What is Trauma?

Trauma is the personal experience of interpersonal violence including sexual abuse, physical abuse, severe neglect, loss, and/or the witnessing of violence, terrorism, and disasters.

Types of trauma resulting in serious and persistent mental health problems: 

  • Are interpersonal in nature: intentional, prolonged, repeated, severe. 
  • Sexual Abuse, Physical Abuse, Severe neglect, Emotional Abuse.
  • Witnessing violence, repeated abandonment, sudden and traumatic Loss. 
  • Occur in childhood and adolescence and may extend over an individual's life span. 


We Define Traumatic Stress Care as:

A treatment with a thorough understanding of the psychological and social effects of trauma and violence on the individual that addresses these effects with supportive, collaborative and skilled-based care.
